The £12 Pet Teezer that helps with deshedding dogs

I’ve used a Tangle Teezer on my own hair ever since a hairdresser recommended them to me back in 2011, four years after they first launched. The revolutionary  award-winning hairbrush effortlessly detangled my hair without pulling, tugging or breaking it, and it’s been part of my haircare routine for over a decade.

But there was one thing that Tangle Teezer customers were begging for – a version for dogs. Tangle Teezer founder, Shaun P, said: “Since we launched our world-famous Tangle Teezer hairbrush, pet lovers have pleaded with us to create a Tangle Teezer grooming brush especially for use on their pooches. Here at TTHQ, there wasn’t a day that went by when we weren’t sent or tagged into a picture or a video of a super happy dog enjoying being brushed with your Tangle Teezer. We had to sit up and take notice.”

In 2014, following three years of research and testing, the Pet Teezer was born, offering a dog-friendly version of the hairbrush we all know and love.

Phoebe loves having her fur brushed and will paw at your hand when you pause to request that you carry on. Not only is it beneficial to help with deshedding and promoting a healthy coat, but grooming your dog also helps build a stronger bond with them, too.

The brand said: “Just as you would spend precious time with your child getting close over a bedtime story, for your dog there can be no better feeling than sharing the love of brushing! It’s undoubtedly a special bonding experience – for both human and pet. It’s an important ritual too. Regular brushing helps to protect your dog against skin irritation as well as helping to encourage a best of show coat for competitions and shows!”

Phoebe has been trying out their purple and grey Pet Teezer, which also comes in a pink and blue colourway, with a smaller light blue and navy version for small breed dogs. This brush is ideal for de-shedding double-coated dogs as well as breeds with shorter coats who just need a little help getting off their excess fur ready for summer. Phoebe sheds a lot more than Frank, which white fur coming off her coat in swathes as the weather hots up.

The brush has a really ergonomic shape that’s palm friendly and helps reduce wrist sprain during periods of brushing. It’s also hollow so you have the option to grasp it, or slip your fingers into it for a slightly different grip.

Using patented two-tier teeth technology, the longer teeth gently remove dirt, reaching down to the undercoat, while the shorter teeth pick up loose hair. Brushing regularly also aids in distributing your dog’s natual oils in the skin to keep their skin and coat healthy. Phoebe loves the attention that comes with an at-home grooming session – minus nail clipping – and it truly never can last long enough. She’d have a scritch with the Pet Teezer all day long if I let her.

Recommended by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, the brush can be used on wet or dry coats, so we use ours both in the bath and outside in the garden. That way we don’t have masses of hair to vacuum up in the living rroom.

I’m quite fortunate that Phoebe and Frank both have fairly low maintainance coats that don’t matt or tangle, but the Pet Teezer is very effective at helping them rid their winter coats while being gentle and offering a glossy finish. The Pet Teezer retails at £12, and I just love that we both match with our brushes and can use the Pet Teezer to foster some essential bonding time, too.

Omg, this’ll be a game changer for my Newfie! His coat was ruined by his previous owners shaving him and now I have to get tangles out on a daily basis.
Thanks so much for sharing, I never knew this existed.

Oh gosh Karen, I can’t imagine how difficult that must be! Let me know how you get on with one if you pick one up!
