Six festive treats for dogs to enjoy on Christmas day

As a nation of dog lovers it should come as no surprise that Christmas time brings another opportunity to lavish our pets with gifts and goods. And if we’re unwrapping a Chocolate Orange or unboxing a mince pie, it’s only right that our canine companions have a pooch-friendly equivalent to enjoy throughout the festive season, too.

Some of our favourite brands have brought out some gorgeous holiday-themed limited edition products to celebrate the festive season, and if you’re looking for a last-minute stocking filler, we’ve shared where you can find them before the big day.

We’ve pulled together a round up of our top six treats this year, including Forthglade, Pooch and Mutt, Lily’s Kitchen, Green and Wilds, JR and Denzels. Each has a suitably seasonal recipe to give your furry friend that warm fuzzy feeling we get from popping the lid on a tin of Quality Street.

Here are our top picks of festive treats for dogs and where to find them:

Back following a successful sell-out run in 2021, Forthglade have released their popular limited edition natural soft bite treats with turkey and cranberry. The Devon-based company’s tasty limited edition recipe is a great way to treat your dog over the festive period.

The Christmas turkey and cranberry soft bite treats are made in their adorable signature heart design, gently baked with a seam down the middle so you can easily break them in half. This makes them perfect for sharing if you’re a multi dog household, or so that they go further – or if someone has gained some holiday weight for better portion control (we’ve all been there).

These high protein treats are made with 30 per cent turkey meal, 24 per cent sweet potato among pea flour, vegetable glycerine, cold pressed rapeseed oil, dried cranberry and dried parsley, making them completely irresistible.

They’re suitable for puppies over eight weeks, meaning even if it’s their very first Christmas, they’ll be able to enjoy the taste of Forthglade this December.

Buy a singular pack here for £1.85, or pay £12.95 for eight – perfect for sharing with your canine friends this Christmas.

Lily’s Kitchen

Who said turkey is just for humans at Christmas? Let your dogs join in the festive feast with Lily’s Kitchen’s delicious Festive Turkey Jerky – an adorable stocking filler this festive season.

Made with proper meat, for a proper treat, this tempting grain-free recipe is made with natural ingredients, including 68 per cent freshly prepared turkey, so your furry family members can enjoy them throughout the festivities, guilt free. Not that Christmas calories count, right?

Jokes aside, it is easy to overdo it at Christmas so Lily’s Kitchen recommends feeding up to five of these a day, and avoid feeding scraps under the table, no matter how tempting.

As these are limited edition, you might want to stock up on them and opt for the box of eight. One pack of these treats comes in at £3.25, while a box of eight is £24.70, saving £1.30 compared to buying separately.

The Denzel’s Christmas Lunch bites have made a welcome return for 2022, offering dogs a delicious soft and squishy training treat that’s perfect for taking along on that Boxing Day walk.

In previous years, Denzel’s has offered Christmas Lunch chews, so it’s great to see them in this handy pack, which are proving to be just as popular with fans.

Made with turkey, cranberries and stuffing, they’re a great way for your pooch to enjoy a taste of the festive fun, along with their Pigs in Blankets bites.

Denzel’s Christmas Lunch Bites – like the rest of their range – are made from 100 per cent natural ingredients, gently baked in the UK into tasty, bite-size treats. In fact, there’s only eight ingredients on their list, so we know exactly what we’re feeding our pets this December.

Helping keep off the holiday weight, Denzel’s treats are low calorie, with around 110 treats in each plastic-free packet, working out at less than 3p a treat. You can shop the £2.90 limited edition treats on the Denzel’s website here.

Green and Wilds

Farmer Fred’s Xmas Turk-in Treats are a 100 per cent natural jerky made with a whopping 96 per cent turkey. It’s as close to the real deal as you can get.

Turkey meat is lean and easily digestible, making it a great choice for dogs with a sensitive tummy, not to mention the fact that they’re also gluten and lactose free.

The herbs in this dried treat have also been specially chosen for their natural worming properties, with the highly palatable recipe also featuring rosehip, ginger, walnut leaves and chamomile.

Priced at £6.25 a pack, they’re suitable for puppies over eight weeks old, and can be easily broken into smaller treats, making them ideal for training or left whole as a high-value reward treat.

Green and Wilds recommend feeding one to three strips a day depending on the size of the dog. You can shop for the treats here.

The final window of the JR Pure venison and turkey advent calender revealed a whole pack of their 100 per cent turkey sticks – and what could be more festive than that?

The treats are made from responsibly sourced prime cuts of meat, with no additives or preservatives. Grain and gluten free, they’re suitable for all dogs, no matter their breed or size, from as little as four weeks old.

Highly palatable and easily digestible, these treats are high in protein which aids muscle and tissue repair, and can be used for rewards, or be broken up for training treats or for use with enrichment toys. These treats are hypoallergenic too, so great for those with allergies or sensitivities.
